FARMING & FORESTRY
Stewarding Land for Generations
Across fertile low ground and expansive woodland, Cawdor Estate manages land with a long-term view - balancing productive agriculture, sustainable forestry and environmental responsibility. Our approach combines commercial viability with careful stewardship, ensuring that farming and forestry continue to support both the local economy and the landscape itself.

Farming
The lower reaches of the Estate are highly fertile and provide excellent farmland. Approximately 1,200 hectares are currently farmed in-hand, overseen by our Farm Manager and his team.
The focus is on a carefully managed arable rotation of wheat, rye, barley, oats, and oilseed rape, carrots and potatoes are grown as break crops. This structured rotation supports soil health while maintaining strong yields and long-term sustainability.

Forestry
Mature coniferous and broadleaf woodlands cover 3,887 hectares of the Estate. These woodlands form both a valued recreational resource for the local community and an important part of our commercial portfolio.
Forestry operations are managed by Cawdor Forestry Limited, an associate company working closely with the Estate team and local stakeholders to deliver a sustainable forestry strategy.
Our commercial woodland includes:
-
Scots pine
-
European larch
-
Sitka spruce
-
Lodgepole pine
-
Douglas fir
-
Norway spruce
We also maintain a substantial newly created native woodland plantation, predominantly broadleaf and Scots pine.
Timber from managed woodlands is processed at local sawmills and used for a range of applications - from furniture production to biomass.
